I knew I was desperate when I found myself side-eyeing myself in the mirror, half-whispering things out loud to myself like “I love and accept myself unconditionally” and “I am in tune with my body.” I always thought affirmations were bullsh*t, yet here I was, trying them out for myself. And to my begrudging delight – they helped (a ton, actually)! And they have proved invaluable in my personal journey – time and time again.
Affirmations are POWERFUL tools for personal growth and development. And you can use them for anything, from improving your health to becoming a more social person. They will help you love your life, love yourself more, and take action to make the changes you want in your life.
What is an affirmation?
How many times a day do you think that you say something positive or negative about yourself? Not just when you are talking out loud, but also when you listen, think, and read. You may or may not be aware of what you are affirming or negating at any given time, but you are doing it nonetheless. That’s why affirmations are such a powerful tool for self-improvement.
Affirmations are statements that we tell ourselves. Useful affirmations are positive, specific statements that we repeat to ourselves to rewire our brains and change the way we think about ourselves.
They should be phrased positively in the first person as if they were already true. For example, “I am a happy person” and “I love my body” are both good, whereas “I will be a happy person” and “I don’t hate my body” are not.
How to use affirmations in your life
There are a few ways you can use affirmations. You can repeat them out loud several times a day, say them silently to yourself, or even keep them on hand and read them when you are facing a challenge you need to get through.
In order to be effective, affirmations should be used for a sustained period of time. It’s also important that you REPEAT them because our conscious mind requires repetition in order to properly process new information and accept it as true, especially when the affirmation is working against years of negative programming.
